Revealing exclusive or little-known information, often with an opening such as “what the industry does not want you to see,” can spark intense curiosity. This strategy taps into the audience’s desire for insider knowledge and shortcuts, positioning the product as a unique secret weapon that can drive remarkable sales when executed well.
Yeah, you know who this is. Popeye and King Kong, those are two characters I'm pretty sure most people don't associate with ancient history. Popeye was punching his way through movie theaters in the 1930s. King Kong climbed the Empire State Building in 1933. But here's the part that's gonna mess with your sense of time. At the same moment America was turning King Kong and Popeye into movie stars, there was a man alive that actually survived the Atlantic slave trade.
Real Experience
His name, Cudjo Lewis. Born in Africa, at age 18 he was kidnapped, transported across the Atlantic on the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to bring captive Africans into the United States. Enslaved in Alabama. Not somebody that heard about slavery, not somebody whose grandparents remembered slavery, somebody that was there. That survived the Middle Passage, that survived American slavery, and lived long enough to see Popeye and King Kong on the silver screen.
Product Information
And that's why this book, Barracoon by Zora Neale Hurston, is so important. It is a one of one. It is the only first hand account of somebody that survived the Middle Passage and survived American slavery. Cudjo Lewis died in 1935. That is not some ancient civilization, that's the same decade King Kong and Popeye were becoming household names.
Call to Action
In 1927, Zora Neale Hurston traveled to Alabama. Knowing how important this story was, she refused to change any of the language when she turned the manuscript into her publishers. They would not publish it because she would not change the language to make it more suitable for a white audience. And this book sat in an archive for 85 years and was not released until 2018. This is a fascinating book and extremely important to American history. Grab your copy in the TikTok shop. Peace.
